Working hard or hardly working

Over the last 2 years, WFH has become the new normal but for some, it’s been more rain than rainbows.

I’ve been working from home for the last 2 years and I love it. However, I know for some, it isn’t ideal (I can’t imagine what it’s like if you’ve got children at home). I’ve tried lots of different things to help make it the best experience possible and below are just a couple of things that have worked for me.

Before I go on, I want to remind you that if you are struggling with working from home, make sure you speak to someone, especially your employer. It doesn’t have to be anything formal, just so they are aware of how you’re feeling. There may be something they can do to help or advise you of services that are out there.

Designate a work space

Even if you don’t have the luxury of turning a space room into a home office, allocate a space where you can sit and work from. Even if it’s just a corner with a small table and chair, just somewhere you work (and only) work from.

Set boundaries

If you’re contracted to work from 9-5, turn your computer off at 5pm and leave it that way. Remember, if you were in an office, you wouldn’t stay there until 9/10pm at night! If you’re on a flexi contract, agree your hours at the start of the week, and keep it that way. If you’re working extra hours every day/week/month, you need to have a conversation with your Manager.

Get yourself dressed!

Don’t work in your pyjamas. Even if it’s changing into your loungewear or joggers, just something you don’t wear to bed. Maybe get yourself some loungewear you only use for working from home.

Don’t be a silent partner

If you’re someone who likes the social aspect of being in the office, set up regular catch ups with team members. You could put a ‘Coffee & Catch up’ session in once a month where the whole team gets together to just chat away; dogs and kids welcome! Prefer face to face? Arrange to meet team members for lunch at a local cafe or if you have the option of going into the office, send out an email and let them know you’re going in for the day.

Here’s a couple of other quick tips

  • Don’t work from your bed – This is where you’re meant to switch off!
  • On top of that, try and keep your work supplies out of your bedroom.
  • Get some fresh air, even if it’s a 10 minute walk at lunch
  • Keep it clean – Before you start your day, have a quick tidy up of all the small things.
  • Don’t wake up 5 minutes before you log in
  • Create a routine
  • Take regular breaks
  • Hold yourself accountable
